THE BOOK
Samuel Block is about to enter the final stage of his life. Like so many people, his dream of retirement mirrors the pages of the glossy retirement magazines—a life in the sun, time to enjoy all the things he had put off, perhaps a luxury retirement home.
But on his sixty-fifth birthday, Samuel is not so hopeful. His business and health are in decline. He sees ten or maybe twenty years ahead of him, living in a shabby retirement home, taking more medications, trying to make ends meet, alone. Looking in the mirror, he finds himself afraid of growing old. The future does not look like a gift of thirty more years where the best is yet to come.
However, after a life-changing event, Samuel meets a group of people whose point of view about aging shows him another possibility. He goes through a personal transformation that shifts his outlook on life towards mastery and purpose. He discovers how he can contribute the gifts of age—wisdom, perspective and experience—to others in a way that brings out the best in them.
Samuel becomes hopeful about his future as he discovers that everyone has the possibility of being an Elder. No special talents or gifts required.
